What Are The Requirements to Study In The USA?

Different universities in the USA have varying application requirements for international students. For detailed information on admission requirements in a specific university, you will have to check the official website of that institution. However, there are certain common requirements for international students to study in the USA.

For undergraduate studies, international students have to follow four general requirements.

  • International students have to submit original transcripts of their high school or senior secondary education or diploma. The universities also require certified copies of the transcripts translated into the English language.
  • Students who belong to non-native English speaking countries have to submit standardized test scores to demonstrate their proficiency in the English language.
  • Universities in the USA also ask for recommendation letters from the School head or principal, teachers, private tutors, academic counsellors or supervisors.
  • A personal statement or essay is one of the most essential requirements for international students. It is the deciding factor for seeking admission to a US university. The cost of studying in the USA also depends on the duration of the degree. If your course is for two years, the average fee in a public institution per year is $12,320. It includes $3,660 tuition and other fee and $8,660 for residence. If you choose to study a four-year course at a private institute, the average cost would be $48,510 per year. It includes $35,830 tuition and other fee and a $12,680 residence and boarding fee.

What is the minimum IELTS score required to study in The USA?

The minimum IELTS score requirement for the majority of US universities is 7 for both undergraduate studies and postgraduate studies. However, some universities may also accept a 6.0 score for undergraduate courses and 7.5 for graduate courses. Some institutions have a minimum requirement of 8.0 in the IELTS exam. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Chicago, Columbia, Pennsylvania, Berkeley, Michigan, all these universities require a minimum score of 7.0 in the IELTS. Whereas, New York University and North Western University require a minimum of 7.5 IELTS scores for undergraduate and postgraduate studies.
